Time for a quick update on the Rebagz line.

Since we last wrote about them on Handbagista, they’ve added a couple of products to the range - namely the Biz Card / Coin Holders and Clutch / Cosmetic Bags.

Measuring 9″ by 7″ the Cosmetic Bag / Evening Clutch is simple, coordinated and definitely something that will evoke a rash of questions from other ladies at any event you wear it to. The most common question will undoubtedly be “Where did you get that bag from??”

the rebagz clutch doubles up as a cosmetics bag, giving you to for th eprice of one in hugely stylish fashion! These bags, as we said before, are vibrant, lively and pure good fun.

As well as adding in new product to the ranges available, Rebagz have also introduced a silver version of some of their bags.

Seeing as how a lot of designers are currently jumping onto the Silver or Gold metal look and a ton of customers are snapping up anything that even vaguely looks like a metal design - Rebagz are obviously moving their brand forwards in line with fashion as well as eco friendly practices.

Shucks - this product is a rare one - it keeps just getting better and better with each step.

Proof? Well, according to their website, here’s a list of some of the celebrities Half The Sky say are currently carrying Rebagz:-

Angelina Jolie & Brad Pitt, Halle Berry, Sheryl Crow, Gwen Stefani, Fergie, Christina Aguilera, Tiger Woods, Eva Langoria, Heidi Klum, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Dave Matthews, Marcia Cross, America Ferrera, Salma Hayek, Serena Williams, Elvis Costello & Diana Krall, Naomi Watts, Bridget Moynahan, Jaime Pressly, Patricia Arquette, Kate Walsh, Debra Messing, Rebecca Gayheart, Rumer Willis.

Worth a look, wouldn’t you say? Rebagz

“When I returned to the UK and searched for similar pieces” says Natasha Kapur “I discovered that the handbag market is so overcrowded with either ridiculously expensive designer pieces or incredibly cheap, mass produced bags…… Well, it was this very situation that led me to start creating my own pieces. I spent about 4 months designing a small, simple range of evening bags and I decided to only focus on evening bags as there are sooooo many big leather bags on the market and the small, simple beauty that is ‘The Clutch’ was being forgotten.”

So started the creation of the Aksuona range of evening bags. We have to say, having seen the range to date - thank goodness for Natasha and Aksuona!

With a choice of three materials used in the Aksuona range - leather (the Bloom), silk & satin (the Candy) and crystal (the Cristal) - we can kiss goodbye to one of those irritating but ever present problems that hits us with any evening affair - what evening bag to use.

Unless you’ve been able and happy to spend huge amounts of money, finding a good quality evening bag or clutch that adds style and an aspect to your outfit, as opposed to being totally overblown or invisible has been a total bind and half a nightmare at best!!

Let’s let Natasha pick up the story of how Aksuona came to be, shall we?

“By profession, I am a geneticist however after 3 dreadful years of working in sales I decided to give up the big salary and follow my passion for creativity and more specifically, my passion for handbags!

Since an early age, I have always been mesmerised by sparkle, glamour and glitz. I’ve always preferred to spend my money on well made, timeless, rare pieces…….

I spent 2 months in India at the beginning of 2007 and realised that they have the most wonderful hand made accessories. They use the most beautiful materials, the colours are vibrant and the craftmanship is all done by hand which gives the feeling of buying something extra special.

When I returned to the UK and searched for similar pieces, I discovered that the handbag market is so overcrowded with either ridiculously expensive designer pieces or incredibly cheap, mass produced bags…… It was this very situation that led me to start creating my own pieces.

I spent about 4 months designing a small, simple range of evening bags and I decided to only focus on evening bags as there are sooooo many big leather bags on the market and the small, simple beauty that is ‘The Clutch’ was being forgotten. I sourced materials from all over the world….leather from Europe, Swarovski crystals from Austria, chains from USA and silks and semi-precious stones from India. I wanted to utilise each country for what they do best so that each handbag had a little bit of every culture incorporated into it.

By June 2007, I had 3 designs :

1. ‘Bloom’ which is our best seller to date. It is so versatile as it can be a simple, chic shoulder bag (without the brooch) or it can be a feminine, fun clutch (with the brooch). I envisaged 20-something girls carrying this on a night out with jeans.

2. ‘Candy’ which is so reasonably priced yet so glamorous. This can be worn to dress up jeans or to compliment a formal dress.

3. ‘Cristal’ which is our show-stopping, jewellery-like piece. This is hand embellished with over 2500 genuine Swarovski crystals. This is such a timeless classic that can be passed down from generation to generation…. it is so perfect for all those Xmas parties coming up.

Within only a month or so of releasing my first 3 designs, they were snapped up by many classy North West boutiques such as Emma Somerset, French Dressing, Muse Womenswear and many more. We are now expanding across the country to Me Me Me in Newcastle, Farfallina in Cambridge and next season we will be found in London’s finest boutiques also…………

Next year we will also be found in boutiques throughout Mexico and the USA which is such an exciting prospect as it has only been such a short space of time and thankfully, our designs are loved by so many people.

My S/S08 collection has been slightly expanded to a few new designs but we do not want our bags to be seasonal as they are ’simple, stylish and sophisticated’ classic pieces. However, our collections will always evolve, the colours will change and new designs will always be added.

We have also added a bespoke service for all our loyal customers as we feel that getting something hand made especially for you, in the exact colour, shape, size, material that suits you is every woman’s dream……

We want to continue creating hand made, unique evening bags for our fellow like-minded, glamorous handbagista’s and always offer affordable prices but with uncompromising love and attention to detail and this is what we want Aksuona to be associated with.”

Here’s a picture of the serious Cristal Clutch.

2,500 Swarovski crystals hand embedded is not a quick nor painless job. I bet this clutch goes a LONG way to making any evening sparkle - and it is set at a much more sensible price than you’d imagine, especially considering the amount of time and hard work that it must take to make each one. (I LOVE with a capital L the way this catches the light and twinkles !)

We’ll cut no bones as feverish Handbagistas - we like these evening bags, for a couple of reasons.

Firstly, the various designs available in the range are different, vibrant and most importantly - utterly usable. After all, when we’re glamming at a party, the last thing we need or want is a bag that is an encumbrance or a right pain! We want simple, effective and we want it to shout out “Cool - serious cool, look at me!”

Secondly, the quality of these bags are such that we can easily see these being items that are passed from Mother to Daughter. We suspect that daughter would be looking for this transfer to happen faster and earlier than Mom might want but hey - that speaks volumes too. Anything that becomes a cross generation “can I just borrow your …. item” has to be taken very, very seriously!

The final reason we like the Aksuona range? As opposed to a number of ranges where money is clearly the prime motivator, Natasha evidently takes her passion for classic beauty, quality and a touch of funk and puts it into her bags. Sure she sells for profit - what business doesn’t? But a business does NOT have to be all about cash flow and positive accounting - it can also be about the people involved and their love of something.

When you receive a bag that is not only well packaged but also carries a hand written, personal note of thanks - you know you are dealing with a passion, not just a business.

We’re filing this post away under “Ones to Watch”.

My guess?

Won’t be long before Natasha and Aksuona gets her own section!

Sarah Oliver knitted handbags are just that - knitted. Seriously, you could have knocked me down with a feather (or even a ball of wool, come to that) because the idea behind it is so simple - it’s genius.

Let me explain.

At Handbagista - we all love the luxurious, rich and tactile elements of the various Designer Handbags. For sure, the four of us aren’t fickle at all - we’ll ‘ho ourselves out to which ever designer is flaunting the most beautiful addition to our daily ensemble faster than you can say “Well really!!” with complete indignation.

But when it comes to writing about them and letting you all know what’s out there - we take a neutral stance and try to give you, as Sgt Joe Friday in Dragnet would say, just the facts Ma’am! Sure, we tell you if we like it or not but we let you make up your own minds and we work hard to introduce you to new names along the way to help you see and enjoy more handbags than you might normally be able to.

So - we try to find new and different handbag designers who use different or new styles and materials or who approach the whole idea of making handbags in a slightly different way than all the rest.

Oh boy - does Sarah Oliver deliver on that score or what!

At the beginning of 2005, Sarah, who lives in Mill Valley SF took the first steps of her life long dream and began making handbags purely from wool - 100% wools that she’d washed through her machine to give a specific felted like look, unique for her bags. She’d make each bag by hand and then adorn it with different fittings, such as brooches and wool fringes or different handles of tortoise shell or bamboo.

That was when the troubles began - selling through 5 Bay Area stores (plus another 4 branches nationally) she just couldn’t keep up with demand. Each bag would retail for anywhere between $150 to $400 and she was being inundated with orders she couldn’t meet.

Then inspiration struck her. Whilst trying to work out how she could expand a hand made business whilst keeping it as local as possible - she thought of the local seniors who she’d visited on and off over the years at the Redwoods home just up the road aways.

Having discussed the idea with the Director she approached the seniors knitting group and asked if anyone would be interested in knitting pieces for her for a fee - pieceworkers basically.

Worked a treat - she started off with 7 seniors working with her and the number has slowly increased to it’s current level of 12 members.

The range of bags covers Evening, Handbag and Shoulder and are very distinct and unique. Especially when you consider that although each bag follows a set knitting pattern, interpretation and the randomness of the adorning brooch will make it truly unique.

the Sarah Oliver wool handbag, knitted by hand and truly uniqueHere’s a good example of an evening bag - The Abigail. Silver handles matching the silver brooch and ruff, this little black number would go with quite a few different get up that I can think of.

Coming in at $162 it’s also a touch of individual style at a sensible price!

My only concern? The one thing I don’t know about these bags yet is - what or how are they lined with, if anything. Common sense sort of tells me there has to be some sort of lining surely, otherwise the insides would get picked and eroded by the contents - wouldn’t they?

Maybe I should write to Sarah and ask her for the answer to that one!

Better still - any Handbagistas out there got one already and care to enlighten us all? Better still - send us a photo of the inside as well so we can all see? (Don’t want much now, do I!)

Where the heck were these when I needed them 21 years ago?

Seriously - if you are about to get married then I suggest you have a good look at the new range of bridal handbags being sold by Olivier Laudus of London. They are divine and exactly what I needed all thos eyears ago.

Phew - mini rant over! Sorry - bad memories of being gouged by secret bits hidden under my wedding gown that should have been in a handbag held by my maid of honor!

Seriously though - the introduction of this range of gorgeous looking stain clutches and handbags is just what is needed by so many brides the world over.

Currently there are 12 different offerings to choose fromm on the Laudu site and all of them are at highly sensible prices - even if you have to allow for the price being in Pounds Sterling instead of Dollars. (Sad to think all we have to do is double it and bingo - sigh.)

Bags range from simple clutches, through clutches that contain hidden straps for you to wear over the shoulder to straight forward handbags. Each comes in the color ivory and there are some stunning silver designs and intricate chain work.Bridal handbags

My favorite? Hard one that - it’s a toss up between the Amore shown left or the Gigi on the right here. Both have silver snake chains hidden away inside the bag, allowing them to be worn from the shoulder and each looks as right as the other for being a feature of your special day.
Sigh - I suppose I should be grateful that I’m still happily married and don’t have to choose.

They should still have been thought of years ago though!

You know, we’ve seen many weird and wonderful handbags, totes, clutches and all things baggy over the years to, well, write a blog about. But Rebagz really do stand out as unique and damn well clever.

The Rebagz Large Red Tote For those of us who have an urge or guilt to look towards being as eco friendly as we can be in the products we buy, the Rebagz handbags are a good step forwards.

Made by Half The Sky Designs (www.halftheskydesigns.com) the various bags in the range are all made from recycled water-resistant, recycled juice packs that are cut into strips and woven together to create bright and cheerful items. They range in price from $27 to $90.

Styles available in the Rebagz range are:-

  • Small and Large Tie Totes,
  • Carry Alls,
  • Travel & Book Bags,
  • Bringing Up Baby / On the Go Bags,
  • Sport Pouch,
  • Four Corners Shoulder Bags,
  • Mini Bags
  • Messenger Bags

And if you’re thinking that these will be cheap, useless items - think again. The Rebagz items use unique neck-tie closures, zip closure and internal cellphone pockets in their different shapes to give the type of detailing that put the bags into the boutique end of the market as opposed to the rubbish offerings section!

Rebagz is the brainchild of Marty Stevens-Heebner, founder and president of the California-based Half the Sky Designs who was a human-rights worker from Buffalo, N.Y. Stevens-Heebner, who graduated from Cornell University, is not only looking at this from the fashion angle either, but also considers the fair trade aspects, ensuring that any of the workers who actually make her bags get fair pay and good working conditions.

Now we have to be honest and say that none of us here at Handbagista.com have yet laid our hands on one of these bags so we can’t speak from first hand experience as to how comfortable, durable or useful they actually are.

So maybe you can help us out? Do you have a Rebagz that you can give a review on or know someone who does?

Leave a comment - tell us all what you think of them and whether or not you’d rate them as a good buy!
