Brahmin? Brahmin handbags? What is that, a caste in India?
Yes actually, that’s true, but when husband and wife team, Bill and Joan Martin, came up with the brand name Brahmin handbags they were thinking about the Brahmins on this side of the Atlantic Ocean.
They came up with the name to reference the Boston Brahmins, blue blood upper class from Boston. They felt they were making a quality product that even the Boson Brahmins would be happy to carry around.
Their signature logo, a silhouette of a New England schooner, again speaks to their New England heritage.
Over 20 years ago, Bill and Joan started Brahmin Leather Works right out of their home. Joan designed the bags, then Bill would cut the leather in a barn on their property.
After putting together the bags in their basement, Joan would go out and make sales at parties and golf courses. They must have been making a quality product because the demand for their leather goods has forced them to move their manufacturing process three times. They’re now working out of a fancy schmancy manufacturing facility in Fairhaven, MA.
Brahmin products are made of the highest quality materials and manufacturing. Open a handbag and you’ll get that intoxicating whiff that says “real leather.” (Let’s face it - we all love to “huff” our new handbags anyway!!)
While most of their products do showcase their top leather quality, Brahmin does occasionally dip into other materials in their Unique Editions collection.
You’ll find Brahmin handbags in a dizzying array of styles: drawstring, flaps, hobo, satchel, shoulder bags, totes, and zip-tops. These bags all have classic designs with minimal adornment other than fine clasps and bottom feet, letting the fine leather speak for itself.
Many of their current collections showcase their Italian croc for which they have become so well known, as shown on the bag below which uses it to good effect on the trimming. Toasted Almond shows a lot of croc in a rich caramel color. Tuscan provides a more refined look of black leather with chocolate brown croc accents. Melbourne also showcases the fine croc leather but in fun fall colors.
If croc isn’t for you then don’t worry, Brahmin still can be. You will also find Brahmin handbags in Italian leather with subtle floral embossed designs.
Brahmin Leather Works handbags go for $175 to $275. Larger totes will run around $300 to $350. You can also get matching accessories (purses and wallets) in the $75 - $150 range.
