I saw this and thought, well, two things really.

First - this would make for a GREAT post title!

Second - well, Handbagistas might be able to help - especially if they know about it.

So here is the article from the Aiken Standard website - link is in the credit!

Auction to benefit pregnancy prevention - By JOSH VOORHEES, Staff writer on the Aiken Standard

Aiken Teen Pregnancy Prevention is asking for donations of used designer handbags that are still in good condition for its upcoming fundraiser.

The event, entitled “Purse-suit,” will be an online handbag auction that will raise money for the United Way agency and its mission of reducing the number of teen pregnancies in Aiken County.

The e-auction will begin Saturday and run until December 15. It will be hosted by online auction super-site eBay.
“We know the average woman purchases three handbags per year and owns more than 25 handbags at any given time,” said Susan Meehan, executive director of the not-for-profit organization. “We’re just asking local women to take a look in their closet and donate any ‘lovingly used’ designer handbags they haven’t used in the past year.”

Event organizers are asking for authentic handbags from top designers, including but not limited to bags from Prada, Coach, Louis Vuitton, Donni & Bourke and Kate Spade.

“We’re collecting purses in all shapes and size,” said Meehan. “The purses just need to be in good condition, and more importantly, authentic.”

Anyone interested in more information about the e-auction or in donating their own handbags should contact Susan Meehan at 441-0016 or e-mail info@teenpregnancyaiken.org. All donations are tax-deductible and receipts will be provided. Contact Josh Voorhees at jvoorhees@aikenstandard.com.

Now - my only comment to this has to be against the quote “We know the average woman purchases three handbags per year and owns more than 25 handbags at any given time,” said Susan Meehan,

3 handbags a year purchased?

Erm, (cough cough) - you might want to change that to 3 purchased every one to two months - or one purchased every one to two weeks if you’re talking about Ruth!!

Apart from that - we like the idea of helping. ‘Nuff said!

“When I returned to the UK and searched for similar pieces” says Natasha Kapur “I discovered that the handbag market is so overcrowded with either ridiculously expensive designer pieces or incredibly cheap, mass produced bags…… Well, it was this very situation that led me to start creating my own pieces. I spent about 4 months designing a small, simple range of evening bags and I decided to only focus on evening bags as there are sooooo many big leather bags on the market and the small, simple beauty that is ‘The Clutch’ was being forgotten.”

So started the creation of the Aksuona range of evening bags. We have to say, having seen the range to date - thank goodness for Natasha and Aksuona!

With a choice of three materials used in the Aksuona range - leather (the Bloom), silk & satin (the Candy) and crystal (the Cristal) - we can kiss goodbye to one of those irritating but ever present problems that hits us with any evening affair - what evening bag to use.

Unless you’ve been able and happy to spend huge amounts of money, finding a good quality evening bag or clutch that adds style and an aspect to your outfit, as opposed to being totally overblown or invisible has been a total bind and half a nightmare at best!!

Let’s let Natasha pick up the story of how Aksuona came to be, shall we?

“By profession, I am a geneticist however after 3 dreadful years of working in sales I decided to give up the big salary and follow my passion for creativity and more specifically, my passion for handbags!

Since an early age, I have always been mesmerised by sparkle, glamour and glitz. I’ve always preferred to spend my money on well made, timeless, rare pieces…….

I spent 2 months in India at the beginning of 2007 and realised that they have the most wonderful hand made accessories. They use the most beautiful materials, the colours are vibrant and the craftmanship is all done by hand which gives the feeling of buying something extra special.

When I returned to the UK and searched for similar pieces, I discovered that the handbag market is so overcrowded with either ridiculously expensive designer pieces or incredibly cheap, mass produced bags…… It was this very situation that led me to start creating my own pieces.

I spent about 4 months designing a small, simple range of evening bags and I decided to only focus on evening bags as there are sooooo many big leather bags on the market and the small, simple beauty that is ‘The Clutch’ was being forgotten. I sourced materials from all over the world….leather from Europe, Swarovski crystals from Austria, chains from USA and silks and semi-precious stones from India. I wanted to utilise each country for what they do best so that each handbag had a little bit of every culture incorporated into it.

By June 2007, I had 3 designs :

1. ‘Bloom’ which is our best seller to date. It is so versatile as it can be a simple, chic shoulder bag (without the brooch) or it can be a feminine, fun clutch (with the brooch). I envisaged 20-something girls carrying this on a night out with jeans.

2. ‘Candy’ which is so reasonably priced yet so glamorous. This can be worn to dress up jeans or to compliment a formal dress.

3. ‘Cristal’ which is our show-stopping, jewellery-like piece. This is hand embellished with over 2500 genuine Swarovski crystals. This is such a timeless classic that can be passed down from generation to generation…. it is so perfect for all those Xmas parties coming up.

Within only a month or so of releasing my first 3 designs, they were snapped up by many classy North West boutiques such as Emma Somerset, French Dressing, Muse Womenswear and many more. We are now expanding across the country to Me Me Me in Newcastle, Farfallina in Cambridge and next season we will be found in London’s finest boutiques also…………

Next year we will also be found in boutiques throughout Mexico and the USA which is such an exciting prospect as it has only been such a short space of time and thankfully, our designs are loved by so many people.

My S/S08 collection has been slightly expanded to a few new designs but we do not want our bags to be seasonal as they are ’simple, stylish and sophisticated’ classic pieces. However, our collections will always evolve, the colours will change and new designs will always be added.

We have also added a bespoke service for all our loyal customers as we feel that getting something hand made especially for you, in the exact colour, shape, size, material that suits you is every woman’s dream……

We want to continue creating hand made, unique evening bags for our fellow like-minded, glamorous handbagista’s and always offer affordable prices but with uncompromising love and attention to detail and this is what we want Aksuona to be associated with.”

Here’s a picture of the serious Cristal Clutch.

2,500 Swarovski crystals hand embedded is not a quick nor painless job. I bet this clutch goes a LONG way to making any evening sparkle - and it is set at a much more sensible price than you’d imagine, especially considering the amount of time and hard work that it must take to make each one. (I LOVE with a capital L the way this catches the light and twinkles !)

We’ll cut no bones as feverish Handbagistas - we like these evening bags, for a couple of reasons.

Firstly, the various designs available in the range are different, vibrant and most importantly - utterly usable. After all, when we’re glamming at a party, the last thing we need or want is a bag that is an encumbrance or a right pain! We want simple, effective and we want it to shout out “Cool - serious cool, look at me!”

Secondly, the quality of these bags are such that we can easily see these being items that are passed from Mother to Daughter. We suspect that daughter would be looking for this transfer to happen faster and earlier than Mom might want but hey - that speaks volumes too. Anything that becomes a cross generation “can I just borrow your …. item” has to be taken very, very seriously!

The final reason we like the Aksuona range? As opposed to a number of ranges where money is clearly the prime motivator, Natasha evidently takes her passion for classic beauty, quality and a touch of funk and puts it into her bags. Sure she sells for profit - what business doesn’t? But a business does NOT have to be all about cash flow and positive accounting - it can also be about the people involved and their love of something.

When you receive a bag that is not only well packaged but also carries a hand written, personal note of thanks - you know you are dealing with a passion, not just a business.

We’re filing this post away under “Ones to Watch”.

My guess?

Won’t be long before Natasha and Aksuona gets her own section!

Littlearth have done it again.

I make no bones about it - I’m a fan of recycled goods being used.

Rebagz, Conserve and Littlearth produce good quality, well made bags that have an added “air” about them - due to their use of old material, recycled into the bag.

Now Littlearth have gone on better by jazzing up an existing product with the simple addition of some bling - Swarovski crystals to be exact.

They’ve taken the already nice, colorful and vibrant New York Skyline Super cyclone purse and made it even more vibrant and jazzed up, creating the New York Skyline Superflair purse.

Have a look for yourself.

This is a gorgeous blend of colors and shapes that works incredibly well.

Add the sparkle of the crystals and the unique look of the recycled licence plates and you have an almost 100% certainty of being asked what your bag is and where you got it from.

The purse itself uses a bottle cap as the closure device - also adorned with crystals - and the inside is lined in felt with the standard lipstick elastic holder.

The handle is made from recycled tire but don’t worry, it’s a mix composite so you won’t be walking around with black stains of bits of flaky rubber on your hands.

Most importantly for a unique and special edition bag such as this - each one comes with a signed and numbered certificate of authenticity!

Keep hold of that plus your receipt and you might just find yourself with a handbag that slowly increases in value over the years!

Here’s a dilemma for you - and I don’t just mean the dilemma of trying to work out if dilemma is spelt with one ‘m’ or two!

You want to get a retro appealing handbag or bag of some sort.

Leafing through your favorite magazine or website, you come across the Pan Am Explorer bag - as shown below.

The Pan Am Explorer bag - used for carry on luggage in the days gone by.

I’m fairly sure that there aren’t that many people around who would even attempt to argue that such a sight is not an iconic reminder of a golden age.

Plane travel, indeed most forms of travel, were still an adventure more than the hassle they’ve become in this pressured, modern world.

In the older days, few could afford the thrill of taking a plane to destinations only ever read about - let alone buy all the various clothes and handbags that the models were adorned with in the advertising images.

The thought that the gaily smiling man and woman in the pictures even had to consider tending to dear little Chuck Jr for 6 hours in a cramped and dirty airport lounge whilst repeated delays were announced and tempers frayed - well, it just wasn’t an element of travel.

It would have cheapened the image.

Strangely enough, that’s also a form of the dilemma that I suspect anyone considering buying this bag will be faced by.

Now I’d be the first to admit that this is not and was never intended to be a designer item, made from the finest leathers and suede trims, nor is it a bag that has been fermenting in the designers imagination for three months, prior to pen ever touching a single piece of design paper.

It’s a cheap looking, plastic looking rendition of a bag that was, well, cheap and plastic.

But the original was cheap and plastic in an age when cheap and plastic was - well, designer class!

Without a doubt, this bag shouts, screams and takes out a full page ad in all the top papers to advertise the fact it is, undoubtedly - retro in intent.

Sadly - bearing in mind the quality of bags you can buy these days for just $40 or $50 - it is just a little bit too much retro in quality.

But hey, if you like bags that are true to their roots in every detail - you really should get one of these from www.panamone.com

Just don’t expect it to last all that long!

Sarah Oliver knitted handbags are just that - knitted. Seriously, you could have knocked me down with a feather (or even a ball of wool, come to that) because the idea behind it is so simple - it’s genius.

Let me explain.

At Handbagista - we all love the luxurious, rich and tactile elements of the various Designer Handbags. For sure, the four of us aren’t fickle at all - we’ll ‘ho ourselves out to which ever designer is flaunting the most beautiful addition to our daily ensemble faster than you can say “Well really!!” with complete indignation.

But when it comes to writing about them and letting you all know what’s out there - we take a neutral stance and try to give you, as Sgt Joe Friday in Dragnet would say, just the facts Ma’am! Sure, we tell you if we like it or not but we let you make up your own minds and we work hard to introduce you to new names along the way to help you see and enjoy more handbags than you might normally be able to.

So - we try to find new and different handbag designers who use different or new styles and materials or who approach the whole idea of making handbags in a slightly different way than all the rest.

Oh boy - does Sarah Oliver deliver on that score or what!

At the beginning of 2005, Sarah, who lives in Mill Valley SF took the first steps of her life long dream and began making handbags purely from wool - 100% wools that she’d washed through her machine to give a specific felted like look, unique for her bags. She’d make each bag by hand and then adorn it with different fittings, such as brooches and wool fringes or different handles of tortoise shell or bamboo.

That was when the troubles began - selling through 5 Bay Area stores (plus another 4 branches nationally) she just couldn’t keep up with demand. Each bag would retail for anywhere between $150 to $400 and she was being inundated with orders she couldn’t meet.

Then inspiration struck her. Whilst trying to work out how she could expand a hand made business whilst keeping it as local as possible - she thought of the local seniors who she’d visited on and off over the years at the Redwoods home just up the road aways.

Having discussed the idea with the Director she approached the seniors knitting group and asked if anyone would be interested in knitting pieces for her for a fee - pieceworkers basically.

Worked a treat - she started off with 7 seniors working with her and the number has slowly increased to it’s current level of 12 members.

The range of bags covers Evening, Handbag and Shoulder and are very distinct and unique. Especially when you consider that although each bag follows a set knitting pattern, interpretation and the randomness of the adorning brooch will make it truly unique.

the Sarah Oliver wool handbag, knitted by hand and truly uniqueHere’s a good example of an evening bag - The Abigail. Silver handles matching the silver brooch and ruff, this little black number would go with quite a few different get up that I can think of.

Coming in at $162 it’s also a touch of individual style at a sensible price!

My only concern? The one thing I don’t know about these bags yet is - what or how are they lined with, if anything. Common sense sort of tells me there has to be some sort of lining surely, otherwise the insides would get picked and eroded by the contents - wouldn’t they?

Maybe I should write to Sarah and ask her for the answer to that one!

Better still - any Handbagistas out there got one already and care to enlighten us all? Better still - send us a photo of the inside as well so we can all see? (Don’t want much now, do I!)
